Chapter 12 - Vanessa Finally Came Without a Phone

Eight months after Dad’s birthday, Vanessa asked to meet.
No camera.
No assistant.
No makeup.
For once, no phone visible on the table.
She looked tired.
“I’m sorry.”
I waited.
“I know that’s useless.”
“Not useless.”
Her eyes lifted.
“Just insufficient.”
She nodded.
Then:
“I didn’t mean for Lily to get hit.”
“I believe you.”
She started crying.
That surprised her.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“Then—”
“That does not make what you did okay.”
Her face folded.
I continued.
“You built the bucket.”
“Yes.”
“You livestreamed her begging.”
“Yes.”
“You kept filming after the paint fell.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to use my reaction to force my signature.”
A pause.
“Yes.”
That was the first complete admission I ever received.
Then I asked:
“Why Lily?”
“She performed well.”
The phrase slipped out before she could stop it.
I stared.
Vanessa covered her face.
“Oh God.”
“No.”
My voice became quiet.
“Leave that sentence exactly where it is.”
She cried harder.
For years, Vanessa had trained herself to see human responses as metrics.
Lily was cute.
Lily generated comments.
Lily made viewers protective.
That was all.
