Chapter 5 - Mom Had Been Managing My Daughter Like Inventory

The digital trail became uglier.

Mom had sent Vanessa photographs of Lily.

School events.

Birthdays.

Sleepovers.

Private family videos.

Sometimes Vanessa posted them.

Sometimes she used them inside creator pitches.

One presentation described Lily as:

Recurring family personality — high audience sympathy and child relatability.

I felt physically sick.

My daughter had become a content category.

Then we found text messages.

Vanessa:

Can Lil stay Saturday? Need kid reaction.

Mom:

Sarah works until 4. Bring camera after lunch.

Vanessa:

Will she freak if she finds out?

Mom:

She freaks about everything.

Another:

Vanessa:

Need Lily for holiday box. Brand liked her last time.

Mom:

Just don’t put Sarah in the clip.

I read that line twice.

Mom had not misunderstood my boundary.

She had actively routed around it.

When confronted through attorneys, she defended herself.

“Lily loves Vanessa.”

Maybe.

“Vanessa would never intentionally hurt Lily.”

The paint said otherwise.

“We were helping Vanessa build a career.”

There it was.

Lily’s consent.

My consent.

Both became inconvenient details beside Vanessa’s ambition.

Dad admitted he knew Mom arranged filming during babysitting.

He claimed he did not know about sponsorship requirements.

I believed part of that.

But ignorance chosen repeatedly becomes its own form of participation.
