Chapter 9 - HE CAME AFTER MY CREDIBILITY

Michael filed his response two days later.

He denied intentionally confining us.

He argued that I had access to an interior emergency release.

Police photographs showed no such release.

He claimed I exaggerated Leo’s condition.

The hospital records contradicted him.

Then he attacked the part that was harder to document.

Me.

He produced old messages where I complained about exhaustion after Leo was born.

A photograph of me drinking wine at Thanksgiving.

Texts where I told Hannah I felt like “walking away from everything for a week.”

Normal fragments from five difficult years were rearranged into evidence of instability.

For one evening, it worked on me.

I sat on Hannah’s bed reading the filing and wondered whether a judge might see the woman Michael described.

Hannah took the papers away.

“You said you wanted a week at a hotel because Leo had the flu and Michael went golfing.”

Context.

Michael’s entire defense depended on removing it.

The temporary custody hearing was scheduled for the following week.

Then the lender’s fraud investigator called Denise.

Their technical review had found that the electronic signature attributed to me came from an IP address associated with our home.

The authentication code had been delivered to my email.

Which initially looked terrible for me.

Then they checked device information.

The login had come from Michael’s computer.

And one more detail had caught the investigator’s attention.

The exact date of the transaction.

Denise asked me to come to her office immediately.

When I arrived, she had the loan timeline spread across the conference table.

She tapped one date with her pen.

“Emily, now I know why he needed three days.”
