Chapter 14 - HIS LAST OFFER
Michael’s final attempt came through his lawyer.
He offered to consent to favorable temporary custody arrangements.
He would cooperate with the lender.
He would sign documents allowing the house to be sold if necessary.
In return, he wanted me to issue a statement describing the confinement as a “domestic misunderstanding during a period of severe financial stress.”
Denise asked whether I wanted time to think.
“No.”
I understood the offer perfectly.
Michael was still trying to purchase control over the story.
I refused.
Not because I wanted him publicly destroyed.
Not because Valerie existed.
Not even because of the money.
I refused because someday Leo might ask what happened.
I wanted there to be at least one version of his childhood where the adults did not change the truth to protect the person who caused the harm.
Carol supported my decision.
That cost her Michael.
He stopped speaking to her completely.
She cried when she told me.
I felt sorry for her.
I still did not forgive her.
Both things could exist at once.
The lender finished its internal investigation the following month.
Their findings supported my claim that I had not knowingly authorized the transaction.
The fraudulent obligation against my interest in the home was being unwound through their legal process.
Michael’s financial problems remained his.
And the district attorney informed Denise that charges would be filed.
There would be arraignments, motions, and probably months of legal maneuvering.
There would be no television-style ending.
Just consequences slowly becoming impossible to avoid.
The evening before the charging documents became public record, Michael sent one permitted message through his attorney.
Tell Emily I wish I had just told her the truth.
