Chapter 11 - CAROL HAD TO CHOOSE A SIDE

I showed Carol the call notes myself.

She read the first page standing up.

By the second, she sat down.

Michael had called her weeks earlier while a loan processor was on speakerphone.

He told Carol the lender needed reassurance because I was busy with Leo.

Carol said exactly what Michael asked her to say:

“Emily knows what Michael is doing. She trusts him with the paperwork.”

She remembered the conversation.

She had simply never understood its importance.

“I thought you knew,” she whispered.

“You didn’t ask me.”

That was the wound beneath everything.

Carol had always assumed Michael’s version was the family version.

When he borrowed money, she protected him.

When he missed holidays, she covered for him.

When he complained about me, she believed enough of it to stop asking questions.

She loved her son so fiercely that she had helped him become a man who expected women to absorb the consequences of his choices.

“What do you want me to do?” she asked.

I hated that question.

“Tell the truth when somebody asks.”

“Even if it hurts Michael?”

I looked at her.

Carol closed her eyes.

That afternoon, she contacted the detective and corrected her original statement.

She turned over bank records showing the money she had loaned Michael.

She gave Denise her tablet.

And she agreed to testify about the seventy-two-hour message.

Michael called her before the protective order prevented indirect contact.

Carol didn’t answer.

He left one voicemail.

“Mom, you know what happens if you choose her.”

May you like

Carol listened once.

Then deleted nothing.
