Chapter 3 - MY NAME ON A DEBT I NEVER TOOK

The police wouldn’t let me examine Michael’s laptop.

It had become evidence.

But the officer gave me enough information to make sleep impossible.

There appeared to be documents related to a large home-equity transaction.

Borrower information included both Michael and me.

I told him immediately that I had never applied for one.

The next morning, after Leo was discharged, Carol drove us to my younger sister Hannah’s townhouse in Rio Rancho.

I did not go home.

I couldn’t.

Every locked door made Leo cry.

Hannah put fresh sheets on her guest bed and moved a night-light into the room for him.

While Leo slept, I called the lender named in the officer’s notes.

The customer-service representative wouldn’t discuss details until I verified my identity.

Then her tone changed.

“Mrs. Bennett, this account shows electronic authorization from both borrowers.”

My stomach tightened.

“How much?”

She hesitated.

“One hundred forty-two thousand dollars.”

I sat down on Hannah’s kitchen floor.

The money had been approved against our house six days earlier.

The lender had been instructed to deposit the proceeds into an account I didn’t recognize.

I asked for copies of everything and immediately disputed my authorization.

Then I called the three credit bureaus and froze my credit.

Michael had already changed the password on our joint checking account.

He had also moved almost nineteen thousand dollars from savings.

That afternoon, a detective called.

They had reached Michael.

He was not in Miami.

He was in Phoenix.

And according to him, I had known about the loan.

More disturbing was what he said about the locked house.

Michael claimed I had been threatening to leave with Leo and that he had secured the doors because he was afraid I would “do something impulsive.”

Then he told police I had agreed to stay home.

I realized what he was building.

Not an explanation.

A version of me.
