Chapter 1 - THE HEADLIGHTS IN THE DRIVEWAY

Carol had barely finished the sentence when headlights washed across the living-room ceiling.

“Someone else is.”

She lowered the sledgehammer.

For one second, I thought Michael had come home early.

Then Carol stepped away from the glass and said, “Emily, take Leo into the hallway.”

The fear in her voice did something her warning hadn’t. I moved.

Leo was burning against my chest. I carried him behind the wall separating the foyer from the kitchen while Carol stood on the porch with both hands around the hammer.

A dark blue pickup stopped behind her sedan.

A man I recognized climbed out.

Derek Walsh.

Michael’s business partner.

He stared at Carol, then at the barred window where he could see me holding Leo.

“What the hell?” he said.

Carol didn’t answer.

Derek had a key in one hand and an empty black laptop bag in the other.

That detail mattered more than I understood then.

“Michael said nobody would be using the office,” Derek muttered.

Carol’s face hardened.

“He said Emily was taking Leo to her sister’s.”

“I’m right here,” I shouted.

Derek looked genuinely sick.

Carol raised the sledgehammer again.

“Then unlock the door.”

Derek tried the key.

It fit.

But before he turned it, Carol grabbed his wrist.

“What are you here to take?”

Derek looked toward Michael’s home office at the end of the hall.

“His laptop.”

“Why?”

He hesitated.

That was when I heard sirens approaching.

Carol had called 911 before getting out of her car.

Firefighters eventually forced the rear lock instead of smashing the front glass. A paramedic took Leo from my arms and carried him toward the ambulance.

I followed barefoot.

As they strapped my son into a pediatric seat, Derek stood beside the police cruiser answering questions.

Then one officer walked out of Michael’s office carrying the black laptop Derek had come to retrieve.

Derek watched it pass.

And whispered something I almost didn’t hear.

“Michael’s going to lose his mind when he knows they found that.”
