Chapter 8 - I MADE THE DECISION MICHAEL NEVER EXPECTED

Michael’s lawyer proposed what he called a temporary family agreement.

Michael would remain away from the house.

I would withdraw the request for emergency custody.

We would privately negotiate the financial dispute.

Nobody would “escalate unnecessary allegations.”

Denise read the proposal once and pushed it across her desk.

“He wants this contained.”

I knew why.

For years, containment had been Michael’s greatest talent.

Hide the affair.

Hide the debt.

Hide Carol’s money.

Hide the loan.

Hide me.

I rejected the agreement.

Then I made the choice that truly ended my marriage.

I filed for legal separation and requested temporary sole physical custody while the investigation continued.

I also authorized the lender to treat my loan dispute as potential identity fraud rather than a marital disagreement.

Denise warned me that doing so could expose Michael to serious consequences.

“I understand.”

“Once investigators start asking for device records and authentication logs, you don't control where it goes.”

“I understand.”

That afternoon, I went back to the house with a police standby to collect clothing and Leo’s medication.

Michael’s toothbrush was still beside mine.

His coffee mug was still in the dishwasher.

The ordinary things hurt more than the empty pantry.

Before leaving, I removed our wedding photograph from the hallway.

I didn’t smash it.

I placed it facedown inside a drawer.

Outside, Leo asked whether Daddy was coming home.

I buckled him into his car seat.

“Not right now.”

My son accepted that answer.

Michael did not.
