Chapter 4 - WHAT THE TWINS REMEMBERED BEFORE THEY COLLAPSED

Lucas woke first.

Ethan followed three hours later.

Both boys were groggy, frightened, and weak, but their memory of the party turned out to be clearer than anyone expected.

Detective Ruiz interviewed them gently with Julian present and a child psychologist on standby.

Lucas remembered that Grandma Victoria had bent low when she handed him his plate and whispered, “Eat every bite for me, birthday man.”

Ethan remembered something stranger.

The frosting on his slice had a chalky taste.

When he made a face, Victoria told him not to be dramatic because “good cake isn’t cheap.”

Then he remembered feeling hot.

Very hot.

Lucas said he felt dizzy almost immediately after taking the first two bites.

Neither boy remembered Sarah screaming.

They remembered the ceiling.

And then nothing.

Ruiz also spoke to several party guests. Three independent people confirmed that Victoria had personally cut and distributed Sarah’s and the boys’ slices while telling everyone else to wait until the twins made their wishes.

One guest, a neighbor named Diane Keller, remembered Victoria brushing frosting from her own fingers into a napkin instead of licking it off.

Another remembered Julian being outside on a work call when the cake was first served.

That mattered.

If Victoria had done something, Julian likely had not seen the moment itself.

Ruiz wrote every detail down.

Then she asked the question nobody liked.

“Why the rush to bury them?”

Julian answered before anyone else could.

“My mother said she couldn’t bear an autopsy.”

Kelly, still angry enough to sound sharp, added, “And she insisted on using Dr. Bernard Wells at the private facility instead of letting county medical examiners handle a sudden triple death.”

Ruiz’s pen stopped.

“Sudden triple deaths don’t usually skip the medical examiner.”

“Tell that to the doctor who signed off,” Kelly said.

By the end of the interview, the case had changed.

This was no longer a strange family tragedy.

It was attempted murder with a botched burial layered on top of it.
