Chapter 14 - WHAT VICTORIA SAID WHEN THE EVIDENCE WAS READ BACK TO HER
Victoria never gave the courtroom confession television writers love.
She gave something colder.
At the preliminary hearing, after toxicology, financial motive, trust timing, and the cemetery rescue had all been presented, her attorney suggested diminished judgment caused by stress and grief over her late husband’s financial decline.
Ruiz read back Victoria’s handwritten list.
The trust memo.
The pre-burial filing.
The question she had asked Brenner about simultaneous death.
Then the prosecutor asked a simple question:
“Mrs. Sterling, when exactly did you begin planning for your daughter’s death?”
Victoria’s chin lifted.
She said, “Sarah was going to waste everything my husband built.”
There it was.
Not insanity.
Ownership.
In her mind, Sarah’s life, Sarah’s children, and Sarah’s inheritance were all extensions of a legacy Victoria believed she controlled.
When the judge denied bail, Victoria finally broke.
Not over Sarah.
Not over Lucas or Ethan.
Over the trust.
She turned toward Brenner and shouted, “It was always supposed to come back to me.”
Sarah heard about that outburst later.
