Chapter 1 - THE TWITCH INSIDE THE COFFIN

The first thing Nurse Kelly noticed at the graveside was not the crying.
It was Lucas’s hand.
The white funeral canopy trembled in the wind while Sarah Vance lay inside the oversized casket with her twelve-year-old twin sons on either side of her, their dark suits pressed smooth against the satin lining. White roses covered the lower half of the casket, and tucked near Ethan’s shoulder was the bright plastic birthday topper from the cake that had been sitting in their living room only hours earlier.
Everything about the scene felt wrong.
Sarah had spent that morning carrying in the boys’ favorite cake, laughing when Lucas begged to lick frosting from the knife. Their grandmother, Victoria Sterling, had lit twelve candles. Julian Vance had stood beside his wife, smiling in the dimmed living room while guests sang.
Then Lucas had clutched his throat.
Ethan had staggered.
And before Sarah could even get to them, she had collapsed too.
The nurse who happened to be at the party had checked for pulses in the chaos and found nothing she could trust. Paramedics rushed them to a small private emergency facility ten minutes away, where an on-call physician, pushed by Victoria’s insistence that the family had a history of sudden cardiac events, certified all three as dead after failed resuscitation.
By sunset, Victoria had arranged everything.
A private funeral.
An immediate burial in the family plot.
One casket, because “they were never apart in life.”
Now attendants stood ready to lower the lid.
“Close it,” Victoria said, her voice breaking at exactly the right places. “Right now.”
Julian did not move.
He stood at Sarah’s side staring at his wife’s face as if refusing to learn a world without her.
Then Nurse Kelly saw it.
One fingertip.
A tiny, unmistakable twitch beside the bright birthday topper.
Her breath caught.
She stepped closer and saw something worse.
Lucas’s lips were not blue.
They were pale.
There was a difference.
“Wait,” she said.
No one listened.
Victoria’s voice rose. “Close it.”
Kelly leaned over the casket and touched Lucas’s wrist.
Warm.
Not normal warmth from funeral preparation.
Living warmth.
“Julian,” she snapped. “Don’t let them close this.”
He turned.
“What?”
“Their hands are warm.”
The entire graveside gathering froze.
Victoria went still beneath her black veil.
Julian reached into the casket and grabbed Ethan’s hand.
Then Sarah’s.
Then Lucas’s.
His face changed so suddenly that it frightened Kelly more than the coffin itself.
“They’re warm,” he said hoarsely.
Victoria lunged for the casket lid.
Julian caught her wrist in midair.
“Back away from them.”
Kelly threw the lid fully open, leaned over Sarah, and pressed shaking fingers to the side of her neck.
For one horrible second, there was nothing.
Then—there.

A weak, thready pulse.
“Oh my God,” Kelly whispered. “Call 911. Now.”
