Chapter 12 - THE BOYS WHO HAD TO LEARN THEIR GRANDMOTHER TRIED TO KILL THEM

Survival was not the end of the story.
It was the beginning of the harder part.
Lucas became afraid of food not served by his parents.
Ethan woke twice a week convinced the coffin lid was closing again.
Sarah could not hear the birthday song without trembling.
Julian did not forgive himself easily for failing to see his mother clearly sooner, even though everyone around him—including Sarah—told him guilt was useless unless it changed how he lived next.
It changed him.
He took leave from work.
He cooked every meal himself for a month because the boys trusted his hands.
He attended trauma therapy with them and separate counseling with Sarah.
Nurse Kelly visited once after the children asked for her. Ethan hugged her so hard she nearly cried.
“You saved us,” Lucas told her.
Kelly shook her head.
“No. You moved your finger. I just noticed.”
But everyone knew that noticing had been the difference between life and earth.
Sarah eventually asked to see the coffin photographs only once.
Not the bodies.
The lining.
The vial.
The bright cartoon topper tucked in among funeral flowers.

That image stayed with her because it explained the cruelty perfectly.
