Chapter 15 - THE NEXT BIRTHDAY
A year later, there was another birthday.
Sarah almost cancelled it.
Lucas wanted it at home.
Ethan wanted no cake at all.
Julian suggested pancakes and a movie and quietly told Sarah that survival itself counted as enough.
But then Lucas said, “I don’t want her to own birthdays too.”
So they held it in the backyard.
Small.
Only close friends.
Only people the boys chose.
No giant decorations. No dramatic theme. Just blue streamers, paper plates, and a chocolate cake from the bakery across town.
Before anyone ate, Ethan looked at Kelly—who had been invited as family by then—and said, “Can you cut the first slice?”
She smiled through sudden tears.
“I’d be honored.”
No one sang until the boys said they wanted it.
No one touched their plates until Sarah took the first bite from her own piece, laughed gently, and told them it was safe.
Then Lucas and Ethan ate.
Julian stood behind Sarah with one hand on her shoulder while the boys blew out thirteen candles.
Later that evening, after the guests left, Sarah found the old cartoon cake topper from the evidence box where she had kept a few things the prosecutor returned after the case was secured. She turned it over once in her hand, then set it in the trash.
Julian watched her.
“You sure?”
She nodded.
“We don’t need that part anymore.”
The criminal case against Victoria was still moving through court. Appeals and procedure had not finished. Trauma did not finish either.
But Lucas and Ethan were alive.
Sarah was alive.
The trust was safe.
And the woman who had tried to bury them for money had failed because one nurse noticed warmth where there should have been none and movement where the world had already decided there was death.
What was found inside the coffin changed everything, yes.
The vial.
The crushed pills.
The proof.
But the real thing found inside that coffin was simpler.
Three living people.
