Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE SALE THAT MADE HIM PANIC

Listing the house was never intended as revenge.

It became strategy.

The moment the property appeared through the broker’s private network, Ricardo received notice because his attorney monitored family assets.

He called immediately.

“You cannot do this.”

“I already did.”

“No buyer will touch a marital house during a divorce.”

“It isn’t marital property.”

“You think a piece of paper changes seventeen years?”

“Yes,” I said. “That is one of the things paper does.”

He hung up.

Then Arturo called.

I had known Ricardo’s cousin for twenty years.

He had eaten at our Christmas table.

He had watched Sofía learn to walk.

Now his voice sounded formal.

“Mariana, before you make irreversible decisions, we should meet.”

“About what?”

“The seven million.”

“Mine.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

A pause.

“There are commitments.”

“Not mine.”

Another pause.

“That depends on what documents exist.”

I recorded the call legally on Alejandra’s advice and sent it to her immediately afterward.

Arturo had just confirmed something without meaning to.

They believed paperwork existed that could turn my property into theirs.

The following morning, the broker called with another strange fact.

A man claiming to represent my husband had contacted her asking whether the listing could be withdrawn because “ownership was under review.”

I told her no.

Then Alejandra called.

“We found the Monday transaction.”

“What transaction?”

Her voice changed.

“The house was supposed to secure it.”

That was when I realised the seven million had never been Ricardo’s endgame.

It was the first piece.
