Chapter 8 - ELVIRA’S HOSPITAL ROOM WAS PART OF THE PLAN
The hospital records gave us the next clue by accident.
I requested billing documents because several charges from Elvira’s admission had appeared on a family card linked to one of my accounts.
In the visitor-log records were repeated entries for Daniela.
Not under her own surname.
She had been registered as Daniela Mendoza.
Family.
Elvira’s visitors included her six times before the morning I saw Ricardo.
The betrayal had not begun in that hallway.
The hallway was merely where I finally saw it.
One hospital security record showed Ricardo escorting Daniela to Elvira’s room during hours when he told me he was meeting suppliers.
Another showed Elvira’s sister Laura visiting Daniela in maternity.
This had become a family arrangement before anyone bothered telling Ricardo’s actual wife.
Then Manuel found text messages preserved from a company phone backup.
One from Elvira to Ricardo:
Keep Mariana with me through the weekend. Arturo says Monday is critical.
Another:
Daniela is nervous. Tell her the house issue will be resolved after the funds move.
House issue.
Funds move.
There it was.
The affair, the inheritance and my property were not separate betrayals.
They were running on the same calendar.
Monday was critical because the lender expected the seven-million-peso injection.
I had discovered Ricardo on Friday.
