Chapter 13 - THE SIGNATURES THEY COULDN’T EXPLAIN AWAY
The divorce proceeded separately from the fraud investigation.
That distinction mattered.
Ricardo’s infidelity ended our marriage emotionally.
The forged financial documents created different legal problems.
Alejandra refused to let either case contaminate the other.
The forensic document examiner concluded that the two disputed signatures had likely been simulated using genuine signatures from older household and tax records.
Computer records linked the draft trust and collateral package to Arturo’s office.
Emails connected Ricardo directly to revisions.
One message from him read:
Mariana will resist if she sees the whole structure. Keep her document separate.
Another:
Mom can keep her at hospital Monday morning if needed.
That email hurt more than Daniela.
There was no romance in it.
No passion.
Just logistics.
My loyalty had been converted into a scheduling tool.
Elvira had known enough to participate.
When confronted through counsel, she finally stopped denying it.
She insisted she believed Ricardo was only trying to protect the company and “secure the grandson’s future.”
Sofía heard about that phrase through me, not gossip.
She stared at me across the kitchen table in the apartment we rented temporarily after showings began at the house.
“Secure his future with Grandma’s daughter’s money?”
“Yes.”
She shook her head.
“So when she said boys carry the family name, she meant they carry the property too?”
I had no answer good enough for that.
