Chapter 8 - Michael Gave Up the Chair
The board’s special committee recommended that Michael temporarily step aside as chief executive while the investigation continued.
Victoria expected him to fight.
Victor’s allies expected him to fight.
Michael surprised everyone.
“Appoint Elaine Cooper interim chair,” he said. “And promote our operations president to acting CEO.”
“You understand what you’re surrendering?” Allison asked privately.
“Yes.”
“Victoria may never give it back.”
Michael looked toward the apartment where Emily and Sophie were living under protection.
“Then the company was never mine in the first place.”
His resignation from day-to-day control changed everything.
Victoria could no longer claim Michael was using corporate power to protect himself.
Independent counsel controlled the servers.
Outside accountants controlled the audit.
Law enforcement controlled the criminal investigation.
Michael controlled almost nothing.
For the first time in his life, that felt clean.
The consequences were immediate.
Two lenders demanded briefings.
A major development partner paused a $300 million Manhattan project.
Employees learned Emily was alive after a reporter discovered the hospital activity.
Harrington Properties issued only a narrow statement confirming that an individual previously believed deceased had been located and that authorities were investigating.
Victoria released her own statement through counsel.
She called Emily “a deeply traumatized person whose allegations should not be exploited for corporate advantage.”
Emily read it at the kitchen table.
Then she laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because Victoria still thought language could rearrange reality.
“I want my legal death vacated,” Emily said.
Allison warned that correcting records would involve courts in Connecticut and New York, medical documentation, and investigation of the false identification.
“Do it.”
Emily also filed for an order preventing Victoria from contacting Sophie.
That afternoon, Victoria finally showed fear.
She did not call Michael.
She called Dr. Bennett.
Investigators already had a lawful preservation order on Bennett’s phone records.
