Chapter 12 - Victoria Finally Said What She Wanted
Victoria agreed to a formal interview with the board’s special committee only after Victor’s attorneys began placing responsibility on her.
Michael did not attend as chairman.
He attended as a family-trust beneficiary with counsel present.
Emily chose to come.
Victoria saw her enter and gripped the edge of the table.
For once, there were no chandeliers.
No photographers.
No staff.
Just fluorescent lights and water in paper cups.
“You look well,” Victoria said.
Emily sat opposite her.
“I survived you.”
Victoria’s lawyer immediately objected to the tone.
Emily didn’t care.
The confrontation stayed focused.
Victor proposed removing Emily.
Victoria approved payments connected to Northstar.
Bennett falsified identification.
Victoria visited Tahoe.
“Why?” Michael asked.
His mother looked at him.
“Because your father was going to destroy everything.”
“By exposing fraud?”
“By pretending business can survive purity.”
She finally explained the fear beneath her cruelty.
During an earlier recession, Harrington Properties had nearly defaulted on major obligations. Victor’s hidden financing structure bought time.
Victoria approved it.
It worked.
At first.
Then the hidden liabilities grew.
Charles wanted disclosure.
Victoria believed disclosure would destroy the company, pensions, projects, and the Harrington name.
“Emily would have exposed it all,” she said.
“So you erased me,” Emily replied.
Victoria’s mouth tightened.
“I intended you to be gone temporarily.”
“I gave birth behind a locked door.”
“Victor escalated matters.”
Michael leaned forward.
“And you stopped him?”
Victoria said nothing.
“Did you ever tell him to release her?”
Still nothing.
Emily understood first.
“You kept telling yourself you weren’t the one turning the lock.”
Victoria’s eyes filled, but she refused to look away.
“I was protecting what Charles built.”
Michael shook his head.
“No. You were protecting the version where nobody learned what you did.”
Victoria had been offered one opportunity to accept full responsibility.
