Chapter 7 - The Ledger Nobody Could Find

Emily had almost forgotten the blue ledger.

Before her disappearance, she occasionally helped Charles Harrington’s former general counsel organize old family-office records. She had found references to transactions between Harrington Properties and a series of private development partnerships.

Victor controlled most of them.

“I asked your mother about one transfer,” Emily told Michael. “She told me to stay out of corporate matters.”

A week later, Emily found a handwritten ledger in Charles’s old study.

Blue cover.

Initials instead of full company names.

Dates.

Large dollar amounts.

“I didn’t understand it.”

“Where did you put it?”

“Back where I found it.”

Michael shook his head.

“That study was emptied after Dad died.”

“Victoria thought I took it.”

That explained another pattern.

At Tahoe, Emily’s captors repeatedly searched her possessions and questioned her about safe-deposit boxes, law-office storage, and friends she might have trusted.

Victoria had not merely been preventing Emily from exercising voting rights.

She had been searching for evidence.

The forensic audit began finding transactions matching Emily’s memory.

Millions had moved from Harrington-controlled entities into development partnerships connected to Victor.

Some could be legitimate joint ventures.

Others lacked ordinary board approvals.

Victoria had signed several authorization letters.

Then investigators found another clue.

The “executive relocation reserve” funding Northstar had not existed before Emily vanished.

Victor created it eleven days after the Connecticut fire.

Victoria approved it.

Their roles were becoming harder to separate.

Michael visited his mother for the first time since the hotel.

Allison insisted the meeting occur at her law office with counsel present.

Victoria entered wearing navy and pearls.

“You look terrible,” she told him.

“Emily says you were looking for a blue ledger.”

For the first time, Victoria lost control of her expression.

Only for a second.

“Emily is confused.”

“She remembers you holding my daughter at Tahoe.”

Victoria stood.

“End this investigation before you destroy what your father built.”

“What did he build?”

She picked up her handbag.

“Something you were never strong enough to understand.”

As she walked out, Michael realized she had not asked whether the ledger existed.

She already knew it did.
