Chapter 14 - Her Last Seat at the Table

Victoria’s final board meeting was held on a Tuesday morning.

Not at the Regency Crown.

No orchestra.

No orchids.

Just directors, counsel, and the special committee report.

Before the vote, Michael met his mother in an empty conference room.

“You can resign.”

Victoria looked out over Midtown.

“And admit everything?”

“Resigning isn’t a criminal confession.”

“It will be treated like one.”

“Then tell the truth.”

She smiled sadly.

“You sound like your father.”

Michael had spent his entire life wanting that sentence.

It no longer felt like praise.

“What happened to Emily after six months?” he asked.

Victoria’s shoulders lowered.

“Victor said releasing her would create too much risk.”

“And you agreed.”

“I did nothing.”

“Exactly.”

Victoria turned toward him.

“Do you think you’re different? You ignored her concerns because they inconvenienced you.”

Michael absorbed it.

“I did.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“That doesn’t make what you did smaller.”

Her face hardened again.

“You’re choosing her over your family.”

“Emily and Sophie are my family.”

Victoria flinched.

Michael left.

The board removed her from all remaining governance positions available under its authority and referred unresolved financial issues to regulators and law enforcement. Family-trust questions moved separately through counsel and court.

Victor’s cooperation negotiations collapsed when prosecutors determined he had minimized his role in Emily’s continued captivity.

Bennett continued cooperating while facing his own exposure.

Then federal prosecutors notified Emily that charges had been authorized against multiple people connected to the kidnapping and financial scheme.

Victoria would not lose an empire in one afternoon.

Criminal guilt would still have to be proved.

Assets would not magically transfer.

Harrington Properties would still have to survive the financial consequences.

But when Victoria walked out of the boardroom, employees no longer stood when she passed.

Michael watched from behind the glass.

He did not follow her.
