After the party, Carter family friends began describing me publicly.

Jealous.

Volatile.

Embarrassed by Vanessa.

Drunk at my birthday.

The alcohol claim was easy to test.

Hospital bloodwork showed very little alcohol in my system.

I had consumed less than one glass.

Then we found private messages.

Ethan to Robert:

Emily has been emotional lately.

Patricia:

If she goes after Vanessa publicly, it proves exactly what we’ve been saying.

Ethan:

She won’t. Emily hates scenes.

Patricia:

Everybody has a breaking point.

I read it twice.

They had been waiting for mine.

It seemed absurd.

James answered carefully:

“Because abusive people do not always make strategically intelligent choices.”

That mattered.

Not every action needed a financial mastermind explanation.

Ethan liked control.

Patricia liked humiliation.

Vanessa resented me.

The assault could be both planned pressure and personal cruelty.

Human motives overlap.

Then Nathan obtained a message from Vanessa sent an hour before the party.

Tonight either she breaks or she signs tomorrow.
