Chapter 4 - Vanessa Was More Than His Mistress

Vanessa introduced herself publicly as an interior-development consultant.
She did work in that industry.
She also controlled Lakeview Project Controls.
The company billed Carter Construction for:
Procurement oversight.
Project coordination.
Materials sourcing.
Consulting.
Some work was real.
Ryan found duplicate billing patterns.
Inflated subcontractor pass-throughs.
Invoices corresponding to projects where Lakeview had no apparent personnel assigned.
“This doesn’t prove theft,” he warned.
“What does it prove?”
“That the transactions deserve scrutiny.”
Then he showed me something worse.
Payments from Lakeview moved into another entity.
VB HOLDINGS.
From there, $1.1 million had funded a condominium purchase in Chicago.
Title:
Vanessa Blake.
Ethan Carter.
Joint tenants.
My husband owned a home with his mistress.
I did not cry.
By that point, the affair had become administratively insulting.
James asked:
“Marital money?”
“Potentially.”
Ryan answered.
“Depends on source, tracing, company ownership, compensation structures. Don’t simplify it.”
That was why I loved Ryan.
He refused to turn anger into bad accounting.
Then another transfer appeared.
$620,000 from Lakeview to:
CARTER LEGACY RESTRUCTURING TRUST.
Beneficiaries were not visible in the limited documents we had.
But the trust had been established by Robert Carter.
One week after I married Ethan.
I stared at the date.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Ryan shook his head.
“Maybe nothing.”
May you like
I knew him well enough to hear the missing word.
Yet.
