Chapter 11 - Robert Finally Chose the Company Over His Son
Robert Carter requested a meeting.
Neutral office.
Lawyers present.
No Patricia.
No Ethan.
He looked exhausted.
“I did not authorize what Ethan did to you.”
“I believe that.”
He seemed relieved.
“Thank you.”
“Don't be.”
His relief vanished.
“You watched.”
“I froze.”
“You were standing twelve feet away.”
He looked down.
“I thought it would stop.”
“That is what everyone in that room thought.”
Silence.
Then James asked about Lakeview.
Robert’s face changed.
The meeting was not emotionally satisfying.
It was useful.
He acknowledged the company had identified related-party payment concerns.
He agreed to independent review.
Why?
Not because he became moral overnight.
Because lenders were asking questions and pretending everything was fine could now destroy more value than disclosure.
That was believable.
He also removed Ethan from approval authority during the investigation.
Ethan called it betrayal.
