Chapter 2 - Fifty Witnesses Were Not Fifty Truths

The police arrived in eight minutes.

By then the Carter family had already begun rewriting the room.

Ethan:

“She consented to a stupid party stunt.”

Vanessa:

“Emily attacked me first.”

Patricia:

“It was theatrical. Nobody intended injury.”

Robert:

“I didn’t see the beginning.”

The catering employee who cut me down said:

“I saw enough.”

Her name was Tasha Greene.

She became the first person in that ballroom to speak without protecting somebody’s money.

“No one asked if she consented.”

Another guest said:

“I thought it was a joke.”

A third:

“I assumed they were filming.”

That phrase kept appearing.

I assumed.

People use assumption as a moral hiding place.

Paramedics examined my wrists and back.

I was taken to the hospital.

Ethan was separated from me.

There were interviews.

Photographs.

Medical records.

Witness names.

No dramatic instant prison sentence.

No magical arrest resolving an entire marriage before midnight.

Just evidence.

Michael arrived first.

Then James.

James walked into my hospital room, looked at the bruising around my wrists, and became so still I almost smiled.

“Don’t.”

He looked at me.

“Don’t what?”

“Become one of those brothers who says he’ll kill somebody.”

He exhaled.

“Fine.”

Michael sat beside me.

“What do you need?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then tonight you need three things.”

He counted them.

“Medical care. Somewhere safe. Sleep.”

James added:

“And no direct conversation with Ethan.”

“I want to ask him why.”

“You can ask later.”

“I already know about Vanessa.”

Both brothers looked at me.

Michael leaned back.

“How long?”

“Eight months.”

“You knew?”

“Three weeks.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

I stared at the hospital blanket.

“Because I knew all five of you would do exactly this.”

“What?”

“Arrive.”

Michael’s face softened.

“That’s not always a bad thing.”

“No.”

Then I told them about the other secret.

Two weeks before the party, I had found financial documents on Ethan’s tablet.

Not just affair messages.

Payments.

LLCs.

Transfers between Carter Construction subsidiaries.

Invoices that did not make sense.

Ryan, my accountant brother, had looked at two screenshots for me.

He told me:

“Do not accuse anyone yet.”

The next morning, Ethan suddenly announced my birthday would be held at the family mansion.

Three hundred thousand dollars of flowers, catering, liquor, and image management.

A party I had never asked for.

James stared at me.

“Did Ethan know you saw the financial records?”

“I don’t think so.”

Michael asked:

“What exactly did you find?”

May you like

I looked at both brothers.

“Enough that the wine might not have been the real reason they tied me up.”
