Chapter 9 - THE CONFLICT SPREAD PAST OUR FAMILY

The review moved faster than I expected and slower than I wanted.
Hartline’s affiliation status was placed under temporary review while the organization requested records from Vanessa: submission history, student authorizations, sponsor disclosures, and internal lineup documentation related to the showcase.
At the same time, parents at the studio began asking their own questions.
Why had Sienna been added to promotional material so aggressively?
Why had Lily’s name appeared in an old nomination page?
Why had Vanessa publicly dismissed a dancer who had just won regionals independently?
Claudia Mercer pulled her daughter from two group numbers and posted a tight, defensive statement about “misunderstandings among adults.”
That only made other families more suspicious.
Tessa was placed on unpaid leave after Vanessa learned she had spoken to me.
Mark exploded when he heard that.
“She punished the one teacher who told the truth.”
Our mother, Ellen, tried to mediate. She invited Vanessa, Mark, Lily, and me to Sunday dinner like she could fix this with roast chicken and polite voices.
No one accepted.
Then another consequence appeared: the local arts council froze a small educational grant Hartline had been using for outreach programming until the complaint was resolved.
Vanessa called Mark in tears for the first time.
Not apologizing.
Pleading.
“If Claire doesn’t withdraw this, I lose everything.”
Mark closed his eyes while she spoke.
“You should have thought about that before humiliating my daughter.”
When he hung up, he sat at the kitchen island a long time.
“I keep waiting,” he said finally, “for the version where she says she’s sorry to Lily.”
She never did.
Instead, Rebecca emailed to say she had found archived correspondence Hartline submitted during the Emerging Artist review.
“I think this is the piece that explains all of it,” she wrote.
She attached a scan and asked me not to forward it until we spoke.
At the bottom of the message she added:

This will force a decision from Vanessa.
That was the moment I knew the real twist had not fully surfaced yet.
