Chapter 11 - BEING RIGHT DIDN’T MAKE IT FEEL BETTER

The truth helped me understand Vanessa.

It did not help Lily sleep.

When we told her what Rebecca had found, she sat very still at the kitchen table.

“So she didn’t think I was bad,” she said.

“No,” I answered.

“She thought I was useful.”

That sentence hollowed out the room.

Lily went upstairs and did not come down for dinner.

Mark took a plate to her anyway.

Later he came back with red eyes and said, “She asked if every compliment Aunt Vanessa ever gave her was just business.”

The ethics review continued. Hartline was suspended from submitting dancers for certain national programs pending outcome. Parents demanded refunds for unused showcase fees. Tessa found temporary work teaching at a community center.

Vanessa, meanwhile, stopped speaking to almost everyone except her attorney and Claudia Mercer.

The worst part for Mark wasn’t the anger anymore.

It was the shame.

“I told you for years to ignore her,” he said one night while we cleaned up after dinner. “I made you and Lily stay around someone who kept measuring you by what you could do for her.”

I put a wet plate in the rack and answered honestly.

“I let it happen too.”

That was the immediate damage after the twist.

The truth did not leave us triumphant.

It left us looking at our own blind spots.

Lily’s national finals entry had to be confirmed by Friday.

On Thursday night she came into our bedroom doorway in pajamas.

“I don’t think I want to go,” she said.

Mark sat up in bed.

“Because of Vanessa?”

Lily shook her head.

“Because I don’t want people watching me and thinking about her.”

That was the new obstacle.

The scandal had become big enough to swallow the dance itself.

I did not argue with her that night.

I only said, “Then tomorrow we decide for you, not for her.”

And in the morning, we did.
