Chapter 5 - WHAT THE STUDIO WAS REALLY PROTECTING

Mark wanted to confront Vanessa that night.

I made him wait until morning, mostly because Lily was upstairs trying to stretch as if nothing had happened and I couldn’t bear another screaming match in front of her.

We went to Hartline before lunch. Vanessa met us in her office with her jaw set and her laptop already closed, as if she had expected trouble.

I laid the copied score sheet on her desk.

“So,” I said, “is this the work of a dancer who would ruin your reputation?”

Her face didn’t change, but her eyes did.

“Tessa had no right to share internal material.”

Mark shut the office door behind us.

“That’s what you’re worried about?”

Vanessa rose from her chair.

“You have no understanding of what it takes to keep this studio alive.”

“Try me,” I said.

For a moment, she looked like she might throw us out. Then something colder settled over her.

“The lease went up last year. Utility costs went up. Competition travel costs went up. Claudia Mercer stepped in when I needed support.”

“And what did she want in return?” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer directly.

“Families who invest expect visibility.”

Mark made a disgusted sound.

“So you sold spots.”

“I protected the studio,” Vanessa snapped. “Do you know how many children would lose their training if Hartline collapsed?”

“Not mine,” I said.

“That’s exactly the difference between us, Claire. You think like a mother. I have to think like an owner.”

We left before the argument turned uglier.

In the parking lot, Mark sat in his truck without starting it.

“She’s behind on the lease?” he said finally.

“You didn’t know?”

He shook his head.

“She told our mother the studio was growing.”

That night he called their mom, Ellen, and learned what Vanessa had hidden from everybody else too: she had borrowed against a home-equity line two months earlier and asked Ellen for another short-term loan.

Vanessa wasn’t only protecting prestige.

She was trying to keep her business from tipping over.

But Lily’s score sheet still didn’t explain why Rebecca Sloan’s name made her panic.

So I called Rebecca and asked her the question Tessa told me to ask.

There was a long silence.

Then Rebecca said, very carefully, “Claire... where did Vanessa say she got Lily’s qualifying video?”
