Chapter 13 - THE CHOICE TO DANCE ANYWAY

After the confrontation, the next steps became practical.
Rebecca asked for a full packet: Lily’s original rehearsal video from our garage, the internal audition score sheet, the crossed-out schedule, Ethan’s cached webpage screenshots, and statements from Tessa and two parents who had witnessed Vanessa’s public remarks in the lobby.
I organized everything in a binder because paperwork is easier to survive than emotion.
Mark handled calls from relatives who suddenly wanted “both sides.”
Lily made the hardest decision herself.
On Monday, she walked into the garage in leggings and a faded Ohio State sweatshirt, set her speaker on the floor, and said, “Can you run the music?”
“Are you sure?” I asked.
She nodded.
“I don’t want the last time I dance this piece to be the time she took it from me.”
That was the moment I knew she was ready for nationals—not because she needed redemption, but because she had finally separated the work from the betrayal around it.
Training looked different now. Less frantic. More intentional.
She cleaned her turns. She strengthened the floor section. She rebuilt the ending so it felt like hers, not like something stamped with Hartline’s approval.
Ethan edited her music cut slightly for clarity after Rebecca confirmed the change was allowed.
Tessa came over one evening and corrected her arms in the garage under the yellow light while Mark grilled chicken in the backyard like it was any ordinary Tuesday.
Ordinary life became part of the recovery.
By the time we drove to nationals in Nashville two weeks later, Lily was quiet, but not withdrawn.
Before check-in, Rebecca pulled me aside.
“There will be a preliminary findings meeting about Hartline tomorrow morning,” she said. “Vanessa has one last opportunity to accept responsibility before the board makes its decision public.”
Lily was warming up in the hallway beyond us.
I watched her roll through her feet and reach into second position.

Vanessa still had one final chance to tell the truth.
Whether she took it or not, Lily would be dancing that weekend.
