Chapter 12 - THE CONFRONTATION AT ELLEN’S HOUSE

Ellen invited us again, this time saying only, “Please. No one is sleeping.”

We met at her house on a rainy Sunday afternoon: Ellen in the kitchen, Mark at one end of the table, me beside him, Vanessa across from us looking thinner than she had three weeks earlier and much older than forty-two.

No lawyers. No students. No studio parents.

Just family.

Ellen tried once to begin with prayer. No one joined her.

I started instead.

“Tell Lily why you cut her.”

Vanessa looked at her niece and then away.

“I was trying to keep the studio afloat.”

“That’s not the whole answer,” Mark said.

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You think this was easy? I had twelve payroll checks to cover. A landlord threatening penalties. Claudia ready to pull support. Parents who expect miracles because they pay seven hundred dollars a month in tuition.”

“So you humiliated a child,” I said.

“I protected eighty children.”

Lily spoke before I could.

“Not me.”

Vanessa finally looked at her.

Lily’s voice shook, but she did not look down.

“You said I’d ruin your reputation. Did you ever mean any of it?”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“I meant that one performance can affect how people see a studio.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.

Vanessa answered without meeting Lily’s eyes.

“No. I didn’t think you were a bad dancer.”

Ellen let out a small, broken sound.

Mark leaned forward.

“Then why say it?”

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

“Because if I told the truth, none of you would have let me do what I needed to do.”

There it was.

Not regret.

Necessity.

Even now she saw her choices as something forced on her by circumstances, donors, bills, and difficult people.

I asked one last question.

“If the complaint disappears, do you ever tell Lily what really happened?”

Vanessa lifted her eyes at last.

“No.”

That answer ended whatever softness the rain might have brought into the room.

Vanessa stood to leave, then turned back.

“If this continues, Hartline may close.”

Lily held her gaze.

May you like

“Then it closes because of you.”

Vanessa walked out without another word.
