Chapter 9 - THEN THE EVIDENCE POINTED AT ME

The investigation nearly broke in the wrong direction.

A forensic review of the mansion’s access system showed my employee badge entering the nursery service corridor on four nights before the night I found Leo.

I had never been there.

“That’s impossible,” I told the detective.

Lorenzo said nothing.

That hurt more than I expected.

The detective showed me the logs.

My employee ID.

My credential number.

My name.

Four entries.

All between midnight and three in the morning.

Suddenly I had motive problems too.

My ex-boyfriend owed dangerous people money.

I was grieving.

I had recently lost a baby.

I was lactating.

I had entered the nursery without permission and physically fed Leo.

An ugly defense attorney could build an ugly story out of that.

For six hours, Lorenzo would not speak to me privately.

Then Rosa remembered something.

Two months earlier, Marco had collected staff badges for a security-system “upgrade.”

Employees received them back the same afternoon.

Investigators compared the logs.

On every night my badge supposedly entered the nursery corridor, my timecard showed me working in another part of the mansion—and cameras placed me there.

The badge had been cloned.

The duplication event was traced to Marco’s security workstation.

Lorenzo came to the hospital lactation room after detectives cleared me.

“I should have believed you.”

“You should have waited for evidence.”

“I did.”

“You looked at me differently.”

He did not deny it.

“I’m sorry.”

I had never heard a man with his reputation sound less powerful.

Before he left, the detective arrived carrying bank records.

Marco had agreed to cooperate.

And according to him, Evelyn had never been told to kill Leo quickly.

Adrian wanted the baby’s decline to look slow.

Natural.

May you like

Medical.

A tragedy everyone had already been prepared to expect.
