Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN SOFIA HAD ALREADY NOTICED
Rosa found Sofia’s old tablet in a locked drawer of the upstairs office.
Lorenzo gave investigators permission to examine it.
Most of what they found was ordinary.
Photos of Leo’s nursery before he was born.
Grocery lists.
Messages about pediatric appointments.
Then they found emails between Sofia and an attorney at a corporate trust company.
Two months before Leo’s birth, Sofia had begun asking questions about Bellini Medical Foods, the nutrition company founded by her father.
Sofia owned twenty-two percent.
Adrian, her older brother, was CFO.
She was worried about unexplained vendor payments and accounts Adrian refused to let her review.
One email said:
If something happens to me, I want Leo’s share independently managed. Adrian cannot control it.
The attorney had prepared a trust structure before Sofia’s death.
It was already known to Adrian.
That did not prove he had harmed Leo.
But it changed the motive landscape.
Sofia’s shares were scheduled to be funded into a trust for Leo once estate administration cleared.
A professional corporate trustee would then have audit rights over the underlying Bellini holdings.
Adrian had fought the structure privately.
The investigators found more.
Leo’s worst feeding episodes began after Sofia died and Adrian assumed temporary administrative control of her estate matters.
The private nurse arrived three days later.
Bellini-supplied formula followed.
Security-camera outages began the same week.
One suspicious event was a problem.
Four overlapping systems were a pattern.
Lorenzo looked at Sofia’s email for a long time.
“She tried to tell me something was wrong with Adrian.”
“Did she?” I asked.
He nodded.
“I told her business fights were normal between siblings.”
The sentence came out bitterly.
