Chapter 10 - LEO WAS DYING FOR AN AUDIT
Marco’s statement unlocked the twist.
Adrian Bellini was not simply fighting over inheritance.
He was hiding a fraud that Sofia had nearly uncovered before she died.
For four years, Adrian had been siphoning money from Bellini Medical Foods through inflated ingredient contracts and fake consulting vendors.
Sofia grew suspicious during pregnancy.
She quietly instructed her attorney to place her shares into an independently administered trust for Leo.
Once that trust was funded, the corporate trustee would receive inspection and audit rights Adrian could not block.
Adrian knew it.
He also knew something else.
Under Sofia’s estate plan, if Leo died before the trust was funded, her Bellini shares would fall into the residual family estate and be redistributed among her surviving siblings.
Adrian would regain control before an outside trustee ever examined the books.
Suddenly at least three earlier clues changed meaning.
Adrian had insisted on controlling the private nurse because he needed access to Leo’s feeding schedule.
He supplied the formula because it gave him a vehicle for the drugging.
He fought hospitalization because hospital feeding would destroy his control over the pattern.
Marco’s camera blackouts and cloned badges were not primarily about hiding one crime.
They were designed to manufacture alternative suspects if anyone started asking questions.
Even the whisper outside the nursery made sense.
Marco had seen me enter.
When Lorenzo arrived unexpectedly, Marco locked the door so he could decide what to do next.
He whispered my name because he wanted me frightened enough to stay silent.
But Leo did something Adrian had not accounted for.
He swallowed.
Not expensive formula.
Not manipulated bottles.
Milk from a grieving woman who had nothing to do with Bellini, Rossi, inheritance, or money.
My body had become the control sample their entire scheme could not explain away.
Lorenzo listened to the evidence without moving.
Then he asked one question.
“Did Sofia know Adrian might hurt Leo?”
The detective shook his head.
“We have no evidence she believed he would go that far.”
