Chapter 14 - LORENZO’S LAST CHOICE
Adrian received one final opportunity to cooperate before trial.
Prosecutors offered to consider a negotiated resolution if he admitted his role in the poisoning scheme, identified all financial conspirators, and helped recover diverted Bellini funds.
His attorney asked Lorenzo privately whether the family would support the deal.
The question was dangerous.
Everyone expected Lorenzo to demand the maximum punishment.
Instead, he asked Dr. Chen one thing.
“What is best for Leo?”
She stared at him.
“A father who stays focused on raising him rather than spending the next ten years feeding a war.”
Lorenzo absorbed that.
Then he told prosecutors he would not interfere with whatever lawful resolution they considered appropriate.
Adrian refused the first offer anyway.
He still believed the state would struggle to prove intent.
Then Evelyn agreed to testify fully.
Marco followed.
Bellini’s independent audit uncovered millions in fraudulent vendor payments.
Adrian’s position collapsed.
Weeks before trial, he returned to negotiations.
This time the resolution included serious prison exposure for the poisoning conspiracy and financial fraud, restitution obligations, and permanent removal from Bellini management.
Lorenzo did not celebrate.
The night he learned Adrian would plead guilty, he sat beside Leo’s crib in the renovated nursery.
No armed guards inside.
No locked door.
No private nurse chosen by family.
Just a medically trained caregiver hired through an independent agency, cameras with external audit logs, and a father learning how to warm a bottle himself.
“I spent my life making people afraid to enter rooms,” Lorenzo said.
“Then Leo taught you something expensive.”
He almost smiled.
“Apparently.”
