Chapter 8 - LORENZO OPENED THE BOOKS HE NEVER LET ANYONE SEE
The next step cost Lorenzo more than reputation.
Investigators believed Adrian might have paid Evelyn and Marco through companies that also touched Rossi legitimate businesses.
To trace the money properly, they wanted financial records Lorenzo had spent years shielding.
His lawyers fought it.
Lorenzo did not.
“Give them what relates to Leo.”
“That may expose transactions beyond Leo,” his attorney warned.
Lorenzo looked through the hospital window.
“Then I should have kept cleaner books.”
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
It was the most unexpected thing I heard him say during those weeks.
He signed the consent agreements.
Investigators found that Marco had received three large payments from a consulting company connected to Adrian.
Marco initially called them security reimbursements.
The invoices were fake.
That same day, Lorenzo permanently removed Marco from the estate.
More painfully, he terminated Adrian’s administrative access to Sofia’s estate and asked the probate court to appoint an independent temporary fiduciary until the dispute was resolved.
Adrian responded within hours.
His lawyer accused Lorenzo of destabilizing Sofia’s estate because of “grief-driven paranoia.”
Then Adrian called Lorenzo directly.
Lorenzo put the call on speaker with investigators present.
“You’re letting a maid and a few detectives tear Sofia’s family apart,” Adrian said.
Lorenzo’s eyes moved toward me.
“A maid noticed my son was starving while all of us were arguing about family.”
Adrian went quiet.
Then he said something strange.
“Leo was never supposed to stay in that house this long.”
The call ended.
