Chapter 6 - WHAT MY FATHER LEFT BEHINDMy aunt Ruth called the following morning.

She was my father’s younger sister.

“Daniel, your mother called me.”

“I assumed she would.”

“She says you’re accusing her of killing Emily.”

“I haven’t told you what I’m accusing anyone of.”

Ruth went quiet.

Then she said, “I found something after your father died.”

Six years earlier, Ruth had helped Mother clean out Dad’s home office.

She remembered finding statements from an account she had never seen.

Mother said Dad had become confused before his heart attack and told Ruth to shred them.

Ruth didn’t.

She had stored the envelope inside a box of family tax records.

I drove to her house outside Hope Mills.

The statements showed tens of thousands of dollars leaving an account jointly owned by my parents.

Several payments passed through Caleb’s company.

One page had my father’s handwriting across the top.

Margaret says this is for Caleb. Numbers don’t match. Ask Daniel when he gets home.

He died four months later.

Not suspiciously.

His medical records were clear.

But he had discovered the same pattern Emily later found.

Mother had used the same defense against both of them.

Dad was “confused.”

Emily was “paranoid.”

Now I was “traumatized.”

Three different people.

One method.

That realization hurt almost as much as the financial theft.

I had spent my adult life believing Mother was simply strong-willed.

I had defended her to Emily.

“She’s just used to taking care of everybody.”

Emily once answered, “Daniel, there’s a difference between taking care of people and deciding what they’re allowed to know.”

I had kissed her forehead and changed the subject.

Now I understood why she eventually stopped arguing with me about Mother.

She had started documenting her instead.

That night, I sat beside Ben’s hospital crib while guilt pressed harder than exhaustion.

I had not caused what happened to Emily.

But I had repeatedly asked her to tolerate a situation I should have confronted.

The next morning, Dr. Shah entered with a toxicology report.

“The substance in Ben’s bottle has been identified.”

I stood.

“What was it?”

“A sedating antihistamine.”

My stomach tightened.

May you like

Dr. Shah continued.

“Daniel, preliminary testing found the same drug in Emily.”
