Chapter 9 - MY MOTHER HAD PREPARED FOR MY RETURNCaleb’s phone became the next problem.

Investigators recovered deleted messages exchanged with Mother during the week before my return.
Most were ordinary.
Groceries.
Funeral arrangements for a church friend.
A contractor appointment.
Then the tone changed.
Four days before Emily died, Mother wrote:
Make sure the documents are printed before Daniel gets back.
Caleb replied:
What if he refuses?
Mother:
He’ll be exhausted. Let me handle Daniel.
The following day:
He needs to believe we protected everything while he was gone.
Caleb:
Emily won’t go along with it.
Mother:
Then Emily doesn’t need to be part of the first conversation.
None of those messages explicitly mentioned drugs.
But they proved the documents were part of a plan established before Emily’s medical emergency.
Then investigators found an email Emily had sent to a trust attorney.
She intended to remove Margaret from all future fiduciary roles after I returned.
She had also planned to ask me to move with her and Ben to a different neighborhood after my next assignment.
Emily never told me.
Not because she wanted to deceive me.
Her email explained why.
Daniel is deployed. I won't put him in the middle of this while he is responsible for people overseas. I'll show him everything when he's physically home.
I closed my eyes.
She had been protecting me.
I had thought I was protecting her by asking her to tolerate Mother.
Neither of us had said enough.
Then Caleb’s lawyer requested another interview.
This time Caleb answered the question he had refused before.
“What was supposed to happen when Daniel came home?” Ortiz asked.
Caleb looked physically ill.
“Mom said Daniel would be easier to reason with if he slept first.”
Ortiz waited.
“What does that mean?”
“I thought she meant after the flight.”
“Caleb.”
He covered his face.
“She told me to put the mug on the table.”
My chest went cold.
“Did you know what was in it?”
He looked at me.
“No.”
Then he added something worse.
“But I knew she wanted him confused when he signed.”

That admission put my brother inside the plan.
And it placed my mother’s real objective directly in front of us.
