Chapter 10 - I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE NEXT PERSON SHE CONTROLLEDThe major break did not come from the memory card.

It came from Margaret’s printer.

A forensic examiner recovered earlier drafts of the paperwork.

One version included a handwritten instruction scanned into the file:

Daniel signs incapacity acknowledgment first. Financial authority second. Do not discuss transfers until both complete.

Another draft contained a note:

If he becomes emotional, wait until medication takes effect.

Mother had deleted the drafts.

Not well enough.

Suddenly the details from the previous week changed meaning.

The papers waiting before Emily died.

Mother repeatedly describing me as exhausted and unstable.

The mug beside my signature line.

The sedating drug in Emily’s system.

The same drug in Ben’s bottle.

The message saying Emily should not be part of the first conversation.

Mother’s original plan had not been to kill Emily.

Her intended target for manipulation had been me.

She expected me to return from deployment exhausted and emotional.

She intended to put a sedating medication in my drink, persuade me to acknowledge temporary incapacity, obtain signatures supporting her control of the trust, and later characterize any objection as a combat-stress episode.

Emily discovered the financial transfers before I returned.

She threatened to expose them.

Mother tried to sedate her into submission.

Then Emily went into labor.

When the emergency became serious, Mother faced a choice.

Call an ambulance and lose control of the situation.

Or keep forcing Emily to sign.

She chose control.

After Emily died, the plan changed again.

Mother rushed the funeral.

She prepared documents for me.

She put medication into Ben’s bottle so he would remain quiet upstairs.

Then she poured the same drug into my mug.

Emily’s death had not ended Margaret’s scheme.

It had simply removed the person standing between Mother and me.

I sat across from Ortiz unable to speak.

For days I had believed the coffin represented the end of what Mother had done.

It wasn’t.

The coffin had been part of the environment she created for my return.

My dead wife downstairs.

My sedated newborn upstairs.

My mother beside a cup and a signature line.

Grief was supposed to finish what coercion had started.
