Chapter 5 - THE CALL CALEB TRIED TO MAKEThe dispatcher answered at 9:38 a.m.

“911. What is your emergency?”
Caleb’s voice came next.
“My sister-in-law is pregnant and something’s—”
Emily cried out in the background.
Then Mother’s voice.
Clear.
Controlled.
“Hang up.”
Caleb whispered, “Mom—”
“Now.”
The call disconnected.
The dispatcher tried twice to call back.
Nobody answered.
Forty-three minutes later, Caleb called again.
By then Emily was barely responsive.
I removed the headphones.
Ortiz watched me.
“He tried once,” I said.
“Yes.”
“And then he obeyed her.”
“Yes.”
That made Caleb more complicated than I wanted him to be.
I wanted him simple.
Coward.
Thief.
Accomplice.
Those words were easier.
But Emily’s encrypted files complicated him further.
She had kept notes about the financial transfers.
Nearly $190,000 had moved through accounts associated with Caleb’s construction company.
At first Emily assumed Caleb was stealing from us.
Then, three weeks before her death, she wrote:
Talked to Caleb. He looked terrified when I mentioned the amount. I don't think he knows how much Margaret moved through his company.
Another note:
Caleb is involved. But I’m no longer sure he is the one controlling this.
That was the hidden truth beginning to surface.
Caleb had practiced my signature.
He had taken Emily’s phone.
He had disconnected the landline.
He was responsible for those choices.
But Mother had apparently been using his business accounts as channels for money he did not fully control.
Caleb’s company had been struggling for four years.
Mother kept rescuing it.
Payroll.
Tax bills.
Equipment payments.
Every rescue made him more dependent.
Emily had seen what I had not.
Mother did not simply give help.
She converted help into authority.
When Ortiz obtained access to Caleb’s business records, the first numbers confirmed it.
Large deposits came in.
Some paid company debts.
But significant amounts moved onward within days.
To accounts Mother controlled.
The scheme was no longer about helping my irresponsible brother.
Mother had been moving money back to herself.

The question was why she had needed so much of it.
And whether my father had known before he died.
