Chapter 9 - Grant Offered Me the Deal From the Hospital Parking Lot
Grant was ordered not to contact me directly.
So he used his father.
His father called Rebecca.
“Grant wants to resolve everything.”
Rebecca put the call on speaker.
“What does resolve mean?”
“He will agree to stay elsewhere.”
“He already has to.”
“Brooke will cooperate.”
“With what?”
A pause.
Then:
“If Sarah helps save the business, everyone can avoid destroying one another.”
There it was.
I laughed.
Rebecca didn't.
“What does Sarah helping the business look like?”
“Temporary guarantee.”
I stared at the phone.
The morning after his mistress attacked his pregnant wife, Grant was still asking for my house.
His father rushed to clarify.
“No one is threatening her.”
I answered:
“Then why does Brooke’s cooperation depend on my signature?”
Silence.
His father had no answer.
Rebecca ended the call.
The next day Grant’s attorney sent a formal financial proposal.
No language connecting it to the criminal case.
Lawyers knew better.
But the substance remained.
I guarantee a reduced credit line.
Grant agrees to separate finances.
Company repays me first.
We pursue “amicable marital counseling.”
It was almost respectable on paper.
That was the disturbing part.
Abuse often becomes easier to recognize once someone screams.
