Chapter 7 - “They Need to See It”

The old phone had recorded more than the attack.

I had assumed Grant and Brooke entered immediately before the violence.

They didn’t.

The microphone captured them in the kitchen while I was helping Lucy find her pajamas upstairs.

Brooke:

“This is insane.”

Grant:

“Then leave.”

Brooke:

“You said she’d already be worked up.”

Grant:

“She will.”

Brooke:

“Why are the kids down here?”

A pause.

Grant:

“They need to see it.”

Brooke:

“See what?”

Grant:

“What she’s really like.”

My hands went numb.

Brooke said:

“Grant, they’re little.”

He answered:

“They'll remember what happens.”

That was the moment I stopped wondering whether my husband had simply been swept into Brooke’s anger.

He wanted witnesses.

Not neutral witnesses.

Our children.

He intended their fear to become part of his narrative.

Maybe he did not expect Noah or Lucy to give sophisticated statements.

He needed something simpler.

Daddy protected us.

Mommy was scary.

Adults can build enormous stories from a frightened child’s five words.

Grant knew that.

Rebecca turned the recording off.

“I’m sorry.”

I could not cry.

Not yet.

“He used them.”

“Yes.”

“For a loan.”

“For control.”

That was more accurate.

The money was the immediate crisis.

But Grant’s real problem was that I had started saying no.

No more joint withdrawals.

No guarantee.

No accepting unexplained absences.

No ignoring Brooke.

He did not know how to live inside a marriage where my consent had become unpredictable.

So he tried to make the consequences of refusing him more frightening than saying yes.
