Chapter 4 - THE NEPHEW WHO BUILT THE LEGITIMATE EMPIRE

Dominic was forty-one.

MBA.

Immaculate suits.

Charity boards.

The man newspapers used when they wanted to write about Rafael’s businesses without writing about Rafael’s criminal reputation.

For fifteen years, Dominic helped move the Corbin family from cash-heavy businesses into legitimate real estate, logistics, hospitality, and private investment.

Rafael trusted him with numbers.

Maybe more than he trusted anyone.

Dominic returned that afternoon with two attorneys.

He had not fled.

He claimed he turned off his phone because police attention created risk for the company.

Reasonable.

Convenient.

He denied touching Rafael’s glass.

Video supported part of that.

Dominic never approached the chair after the wine was poured.

But he had arrived twenty minutes early.

Before Rafael.

Before Vincent.

Before several cameras were fully focused on the private dining room.

The server remembered Dominic asking whether Rafael’s usual place setting had been prepared.

Nothing illegal about that.

Then detectives found another detail.

Rafael’s usual wineglass had been replaced shortly before dinner.

A small chip on the rim.

Dominic pointed it out.

Staff brought another.

Still not proof.

Then my own life exploded again.

A gossip site learned the “dishwasher who diagnosed the mob boss” was the same toxicologist involved in the Caldera-Kline scandal.

Reporters appeared outside Bello Rosso.

The restaurant owner fired me.

Not cruelly.

Terrified.

“I can’t have cameras outside every shift.”

I understood.

That did not pay rent.

Then an anonymous email reached Detective Ruiz.

SUBJECT:

ASK DR. HART ABOUT ACONITE.

Attached were records showing I had handled aconitine reference material during academic research.

True.

Fourteen years earlier.

Another attachment described me as:

OBSESSIVE REGARDING CALDERA-KLINE.

EMOTIONALLY INVESTED IN PROVING PRIOR THEORIES.

The phrasing made my stomach turn.

I had seen language like it before.

Four years earlier.

From the consultant report that helped dismantle my credibility.

Not the exact sentences.

The same architecture.

Don’t attack the data first.

Attack the person interpreting it.

Detective Ruiz asked:

“Could someone have found this online?”

“Some of it.”

“All?”

“No.”

The academic inventory was archived internally.

My old hospital conflict assessments were not public.

Someone had access to material used during the original campaign against me.

For the first time, Rafael’s poisoning and my career stopped looking like two separate stories.
