Chapter 14 - SOFIA’S NAME

Rafael eventually left the hospital.
He also entered a different kind of legal reality.
His cooperation in the Caldera-Kline matter did not grant immunity for unrelated conduct.
Good.
Damon continued working for him.
Vincent retired from everything connected to Rafael.
His relationship with Rafael survived only in limited form.
Fear had made him betray a friend.
Rafael understood because fear around family was a language both men spoke too well.
One afternoon Rafael asked me to meet at Bello Rosso.
I nearly refused.
Then agreed after hours.
The private dining room had been renovated.
New carpet.
New sideboard.
Same chandelier.
The table where Rafael collapsed was gone.
He placed one folder in front of me.
SOFIA CORBIN.
Inside was the original unedited copy of my safety assessment.
My signature.
Four years earlier.
I touched the page.
“I thought this was gone.”
“So did Caldera-Kline.”
“What do you want me to do with it?”
“Keep it.”
“No.”
Rafael looked surprised.
“It belongs in the case record.”
“It already is.”
“Then Sofia’s family should keep the personal copy.”
He looked at the folder.
I continued:
“Your daughter does not need to become proof that I was right.”
That hit him.
Sofia had become evidence for everyone.
Caldera-Kline used her as uncertainty.
Rafael used her as motive.
I used her case in arguments.
She had also been a woman who loved sailing, according to the photograph in the file.
Collected terrible postcards.
Hated jazz.
Those details mattered because people become easier to sacrifice when they exist only as data.
Rafael closed the folder.
“You would have liked her.”
“Maybe.”
He smiled faintly.
“She would have disliked you.”
“Better.”
We both laughed.
May you like
It was the closest thing we ever had to friendship.
That was enough.
