Chapter 11 - RAFAEL WAS NOT THE HERO OF MY STORY

After Part 10, reporters tried to turn Rafael into the father who avenged his daughter.

I hated that version.

Rafael had evidence for two years.

He did not release it.

He leveraged it.

He negotiated around it.

He waited.

So I confronted him.

“You could have helped patients.”

“I was gathering proof.”

“You were gathering control.”

He didn’t answer.

“You could have helped me.”

“You were already gone.”

“I was washing dishes twenty minutes from you.”

Rafael looked ashamed.

Maybe.

With powerful men, shame often resembles calculation.

“I thought if I moved too early, Dominic would destroy the trail.”

“Maybe.”

I leaned forward.

“But don't turn delay into virtue because it eventually became useful.”

His expression hardened.

“You enjoy speaking to me this way.”

“No.”

I thought about Damon’s pistol.

The locked dining room.

Rafael’s reputation.

“I finally don’t care whether the powerful man in front of me likes the conclusion.”

That was different.

Then Rafael admitted something.

He had initially planned to use the Caldera-Kline archive to negotiate protection around unrelated financial investigations involving Corbin businesses.

Not erase crimes.

Create leverage.

The federal attorneys refused.

Good.

“So why were you still meeting them?”

“Because Sofia deserved the truth.”

“And the people who didn’t have your daughter’s last name?”

He looked away.

That was the limit of Rafael’s moral transformation.

He loved specifically.

He acted strategically.

The overlap helped uncover wrongdoing.

It did not sanitize him.

I agreed to assist investigators as an expert consultant only under independent terms.

No Corbin money.

No private retaliation.

No favors.

Rafael accepted because the alternative was losing my help.

Sometimes boundaries do not require people to become better.

Only for incentives to change.
