Chapter 9 - EVERYBODY HAD SEEN A DIFFERENT PIECE

Dr. Keller did not cover up an assault.
That was important.
He was a physician who volunteered with several local combat-sports programs and occasionally saw Iron Forge athletes privately.
His records showed Emily presented with a shoulder strain and bruising.
She told him it happened during sparring.
He documented exactly that.
But Ray had called him beforehand.
The note in Keller's office phone log read:
Female member hurt training with Dustin. Relationship issue too. Keep visit low-key.
When investigators asked why Ray mentioned the relationship, Keller looked uncomfortable.
“He said they were having problems and she might be emotional.”
That phrase had traveled.
Emotional.
Volatile.
Dramatic.
Difficult.
Every person received enough framing to reinterpret what they saw.
Kayla had been dramatic.
Emily was emotional.
Dustin was intense.
Ray was protecting the gym.
Nobody had been given the entire sequence.
Then a young fighter named Nate Brooks came forward.
He was the one who recognized me at the gym.
Nate had trained at Iron Forge for two years.
He admired Dustin.
Until the day after my visit.
“What changed?” Detective Lewis asked.
Nate hesitated.
Then admitted Dustin had asked him to lie.
About what?
Whether the training cameras were operational.
Dustin wanted every fighter to say the overhead system had been broken for months.
Nate refused.
Ray did not directly order him to lie.
But he said:
“Don't destroy the gym over relationship drama.”
That sentence pushed Nate toward police.
He also provided something else.
A group chat.
Dustin had written after Emily's hospitalization:
If she runs to Daddy, I'll make sure everyone sees psycho Emily.
Another fighter replied:
You have full video though.
Dustin:
Full video makes it look worse.
That message was devastating.
Not because it proved the hospital assault.
It didn't.
But it proved Dustin understood context made his edited evidence misleading.
Then Nate remembered a final detail.
The night Emily went to the hospital, Dustin arrived at Iron Forge after midnight.
Ray met him there.
They spent thirty-seven minutes inside the office.
Dustin left carrying a portable hard drive.
Police obtained a warrant.
The drive was missing.
But Dustin's car had recently been impounded following his arrest on an unrelated protective-order violation.
Inside the trunk was an empty electronics case.
And beneath it, an envelope containing photographs of Emily.
Not romantic photographs.

Surveillance photographs.
Outside my house.
