Chapter 4 - THE COACH WHO REMEMBERED NOTHING

Iron Forge MMA belonged to Raymond Brennan.
Everyone called him Coach Ray.
Fifty-two.
Former regional fighter.
Bald head, broken nose, permanently folded arms.
When Emily asked for the gym's security footage through counsel, Ray replied that recordings automatically deleted after thirty days.
That would have been normal.
Except Emily's older incident had been discussed with Ray the morning afterward.
She remembered because she had shown him a bruise.
“What did he say?” I asked.
“He told me Dustin gets intense.”
“Anything else?”
Emily looked embarrassed.
“He said fighters have complicated relationships.”
I felt anger moving upward.
Rebecca noticed.
“Thomas.”
“I know.”
Ray later denied remembering the conversation.
He also said he had never witnessed Dustin behave violently outside sanctioned training.
Then another woman contacted Emily.
Her name was Kayla Price.
Twenty-nine.
Former Iron Forge member.
Former girlfriend of Dustin Cole.
She had seen a photograph Emily's cousin posted asking for information about Dustin's behavior.
Kayla's first message contained six words:
He did this to me too.
Her story sounded painfully familiar.
Jealousy.
Isolation.
A shove.
Apology.
Then increasingly physical “play fighting” whenever Dustin wanted to frighten her without leaving obvious injuries.
Kayla once reported him to Coach Ray.
Ray refunded her remaining membership and suggested she train elsewhere “to reduce drama.”
“Did he document the complaint?” Rebecca asked.
“No.”
“Did you report Dustin to police?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Kayla laughed without humor.
“Because Dustin sent me the video of me throwing a lamp at him.”
Context again.
Dustin provoked.
Recorded reactions.
Preserved only the moment that made the other person look dangerous.
It was not sophisticated.
It did not need to be.
Most victims already wondered whether they would be believed.
Dustin simply supplied material for the doubt.
Then Kayla mentioned something else.
Iron Forge had a second camera system.
Not security.
Training review.
Several fighters used ceiling-mounted cameras to study sparring rounds.
Those recordings were stored separately.
Emily stared at her.
“Ray told us there was nothing.”
May you like
Kayla answered:
“Then Ray lied.”
