Chapter 7 - The Pattern Behind the Kindness

I started reconstructing the month before the park.

Not investigating the criminal case myself. Detective Miller had been very clear about that.

I reconstructed my own life.

Daniel had suddenly become more agreeable about parenting exchanges.

Amber had apologized for calling me selfish.

Carol had encouraged me to “stop treating everyone like enemies.”

And twice, Daniel had casually asked whether I still carried ibuprofen and allergy medicine in the black gym tote I kept in my car.

At the time the question meant nothing.

Now it meant enough that I forwarded it to Miller.

My apartment parking records supplied another piece.

My car had remained locked in the garage until I left for Liberty Oak Park.

Security footage showed nobody entering it.

Amber could not have found Daniel's prescription in my bag because she never had access to my bag.

CPS conducted a formal forensic interview with Lily later that week.

The investigator did not tell me everything, but Aaron was permitted to share one disclosure relevant to Caleb's safety.

Lily remembered Amber pouring something into Caleb's lemonade.

She also remembered asking why.

Amber had answered:

“We're helping Uncle Daniel.”

That sentence changed the investigation.

So did Daniel's financial records.

His landscaping business was failing.

He had missed two mortgage payments and borrowed heavily against equipment.

Under our temporary support arrangement, he was paying child support because Caleb stayed with me most school nights.

If he became the primary residential parent, that calculation could change.

But money alone didn't fully explain it.

Daniel had fought every mention of my planned move to Chattanooga, where I had been offered a supervisory position closer to my parents.

He had told friends I was “taking Caleb away.”

Fear, money, resentment and custody had been sitting together for months.

The park was beginning to look less like Amber losing control.

It looked like someone had tried to manufacture a story.

Caleb nearly died inside it.
