Chapter 11 - What Protecting Caleb Really Meant

I agreed to the forensic interview.

I hated myself for agreeing.

Caleb had only recently started sleeping through the night again. He woke whenever someone opened a drink near him. At dinner he watched me pour milk directly from the carton before he would touch his glass.

His pediatrician referred him to a child trauma therapist.

The therapist told me not to promise him that nothing bad would ever happen again.

“Promise him what you can actually control,” she said.

So I promised I would listen.

The forensic interviewer did not ask Caleb whether Daddy tried to poison him.

She used open questions.

What did he remember about Saturday?

What had adults said before the park?

Caleb remembered his father giving Amber a brown bag.

He remembered Daniel telling him, “Be good for Aunt Amber today because Mommy has to learn something.”

He did not understand what that meant.

Neither did I until now.

My own blind spot became impossible to ignore.

Daniel's behavior had been escalating for months.

I had explained it away because I wanted an amicable divorce.

I had let him photograph my home without pushing back.

I had tolerated comments about my parenting because I didn't want Caleb trapped between us.

I had agreed to Amber's outing largely because Daniel accused me of keeping his family away.

My desire to look reasonable had become something he could manipulate.

That was my mistake.

The crime was still his.

Prosecutors informed Daniel's attorney that charges were under active review.

Amber remained restricted from Lily.

But the evidence created a new problem.

Carol, my mother-in-law, admitted Daniel had told her about a plan to “prove Sarah drinks around Caleb.”

She claimed she thought he meant hiring a custody investigator.

“Why didn't you tell me?” I asked.

Carol covered her face.

“Because I thought he was angry, not dangerous.”

Knowing the truth hadn't protected anyone.

Silence had simply given Daniel more room.
