Chapter 10 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

Six weeks before Caleb was poisoned, Daniel had filed a photograph showing my black gym tote sitting open on the passenger seat of my car.

He had submitted it as part of his claim that I transported “unsecured medications” around Caleb.

There were no medications visible in the photograph.

At the time my attorney had dismissed it as meaningless theatrics.

Detective Miller did not.

He enlarged the image.

Inside the tote were my headphones, a water bottle, a folded therapy uniform and a bright orange zipper pouch I used for first-aid supplies.

Amber had told police the prescription bottle was inside that orange pouch.

There was only one problem.

I had stopped carrying the orange pouch three weeks before the park because the zipper broke.

Amber had never seen it.

The photograph Daniel took was the only recent image showing where it had once been kept.

Miller then obtained messages Daniel had sent Amber—not about poisoning, but about the custody case.

One read:

Make sure whatever they find looks like the picture.

Another:

I only need enough for Sarah to look reckless. Caleb will be fine.

The twist was no longer that Amber had used Daniel's medication.

The twist was that Daniel had built the accusation against me before the event existed.

The strange language in his custody filing.

His questions about my gym tote.

His insistence that Amber take Caleb Saturday.

His question about whether police found the bottle.

Even Amber's sudden friendliness.

None of it had been reconciliation.

It had been staging.

Daniel had apparently convinced himself this wasn't the same thing as harming his son because he expected Caleb to wake up.

He wanted a frightened hospital visit, a suspicious toxicology report and a bottle in my belongings.

He wanted evidence.

He nearly created a funeral.

Detective Miller closed the file in front of him.

“There's one more decision you need to make,” he told me.

Prosecutors wanted Caleb interviewed by a trained child specialist about what Daniel had said before that Saturday.

I had spent a week protecting my son from this case.

Now protecting him might require letting him speak inside it.
