Chapter 1 - The Child on the Grass

My six-year-old son was lying so still in the grass that, for one sick second, I thought I had arrived too late.

“Caleb!”

I dropped beside him at Liberty Oak Park, scraping both knees through my jeans. His blond hair was damp against his forehead. One sneaker had come loose. His lips looked almost colorless.

My niece Lily was crouched beside him, sobbing into both hands.

Amber stood ten feet away beneath an oak tree, holding her phone.

“What did you do to him?” I screamed.

My sister-in-law sighed.

“Sarah, stop making this worse. He was wound up all morning. I gave him a little something to calm him down.”

I put two fingers against Caleb’s neck.

His pulse was there.

Barely.

I called 911, put the phone on speaker, and followed the dispatcher’s instructions while Amber kept telling me Caleb was “just sleeping.”

That morning, her offer to take him to the park had seemed almost generous.

Amber and I had barely spoken civilly since Daniel and I separated five months earlier. She had criticized everything from Caleb’s bedtime to the fact that I worked full-time as a physical therapist.

Then, suddenly, she wanted a cousin day with Caleb and eight-year-old Lily.

Daniel had encouraged it.

Give her a chance, Sarah. Caleb needs his family.

Now my son could barely breathe.

The paramedics arrived in less than seven minutes.

One knelt beside Caleb while the other asked Amber what she had given him.

“Some relaxation stuff,” she said. “Nothing serious.”

“What was in it?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

Lily lowered her hands.

“Mommy put it in his lemonade.”

Amber spun toward her.

“Lily.”

The warning in her voice made my niece physically shrink.

A paramedic looked at me.

I looked at Amber.

Then Lily whispered the detail that made the whole afternoon feel suddenly deliberate.

“Mommy said Caleb had to get sleepy before Aunt Sarah came.”
