Chapter 9 - THE FOLDER SHE THOUGHT DAVID WOULD NEVER FINDThe break came from Beth.
David’s older sister called late Tuesday night.
“Mom asked me to get something from her house.”
David put her on speaker.
“What?”
“A blue folder from the cabinet in Dad’s old office.”
“Why?”
“She said you were trying to make her look crazy and there were documents proving you wanted her helping with the kids.”
David and I looked at each other.
“Did you get it?”
“Yes.”
“Did you open it?”
Beth hesitated.
“David, I think you need to see this.”
She brought the folder to our attorney’s office the next morning.
Inside were copies of Rose’s treatment schedule.
Henry’s school calendar.
Our insurance cards.
The forged pickup authorization.
And printed instructions titled:
Temporary Caregiver Authority — Minor Children
Most were simply informational materials downloaded from legal websites.
But behind them was a draft document naming Patricia as temporary caregiver for Henry and Rose during “parental incapacity arising from ongoing medical crisis.”
Our names appeared at the bottom.
Signature lines included.
Neither was signed.
Yet.
Rachel examined it carefully.
“This draft by itself gives her nothing.”
David nodded.
“But it tells us what she wanted.”
The next page was worse.
A handwritten checklist in Patricia’s handwriting:
school pickup accepted
pediatric office?
Henry appointment
Rose records
emergency contact update
family witnesses
Family witnesses.
Sunday dinner suddenly looked different.
Had she invited everyone there because she expected us to surrender?
Had she planned to frame the haircut as evidence that she was already functioning as the practical caregiver?
Rachel cautioned us.
“We don’t jump ahead of the evidence.”
She was right.
But evidence kept catching up.
At the bottom of Patricia’s checklist were three words:
After next admission.

Rose had another hospital admission scheduled in twelve days.
Patricia had been planning around it.
